Decapeptyl SR 3mg powder and solvent for suspension for injection 1 vial
Decapeptyl is a medicine containing triptorelin acetate which is used in endometriosis. Triptorelin belongs to a group of medicines called gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. It lowers the levels of oestrogen in women, and testosterone in men.
In women, endometriosis and uterine fibroids are treated with triptorelin. Endometriosis is a condition where tissue resembling the womb or uterus lining (endometrium) grows in other sites in the body. The growth of this tissue is stimulated by oestrogen, so decreasing oestrogen levels with triptorelin will stop the growth of this tissue, thereby relieving symptoms.
In men, the growth of some prostate cancers is stimulated by testosterone. Reducing the body's levels of testosterone therefore deprives the tumour of testosterone and causes it to shrink.
Decapeptyl SR 3 mg can cause unwanted side effects such as hot flushes and vaginal dryness. Skin rash, hair loss, feelings of weakness, headache, weight gain, fluid retenion, painful joints, painful muscles, transient sight disturbances and temporary increases in blood pressure may occur. A small loss in bone density occurs during treatment.
If any side effect is troublesome, or causes you concern, you should tell your doctor.
