Carbon Reduction Plan

Personal Homecare Pharmacy (PHP) is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040.  The delivery of this ambition will start immediately through the implementation of the following Carbon Reduction Plan.  This charts our plan to either commence carbon reduction in a sustainable way, or describes our existing activities and progress.

Top Management (Director or equivalent senior leadership) are committed to allocating sufficient resources and investment to reduce carbon emissions over the term of this Contract and in accordance with a defined reduction trajectory which achieves Net Zero emissions by 2040.  Carbon Emissions will be continually monitored against this plan to assess progress and interventions as necessary will be made to keep to the planned reductions trajectory.

Personal Homecare Pharmacy understands and accepts that further investigation will be taken should it fail to:

  • Sign this commitment
  • Produce a carbon emissions reduction trajectory proposal (to be accepted by stakeholders) that sets out the plan to achieve net zero by 2040 or keep to the agreed trajectory
  • Publish their Carbon Reduction Plan in accordance with the Technical Standard

Baseline emissions footprint

Baseline emissions refer to a historical record of greenhouse gases that were generated before the implementation of emission reduction strategies. They serve as the benchmark against which emission reductions can be assessed.

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol breaks emissions sources down into three categories or Scopes. All Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions are to be included when completing this CRP, along with a subset of Scope 3 emissions.

Scope 1 emissions— This covers the direct Green House Gas (GHG) emissions that PHP make directly for example the emissions from boilers and vehicles.

Scope 2 emissions — These are the emissions produced indirectly for example the emissions produced to generate the electricity or energy PHP purchase.

Scope 3 emissions — This covers emissions related to PHP but not produced as a result of PHPs actions. For example this includes the emissions produced by the fleet of couriers and suppliers who are used to service PHP as well as the emissions from customers using our services.

It also includes emissions related to:

  • inbound and outbound logistics
  • employee commuting
  • waste generated in operations
  • emissions from extraction, production and transportation of goods and services
  • paper and packaging material, water consumption
  • the energy consumption associated with running servers and data centres that host PHP’s online services, as well as any other indirect emissions tied to the use of your digital products or services such as the energy related to access the patient portal etc.

Baseline Year: 2019

Baseline year emissions:
Emissions Total (tCO2e)
Scope 1 35
Scope 2 36
Scope 3 (split by the 5 subcategories of Scope 3 emissions and detail each source – see Notes 1 and 2 below) 657
(Fuel and Energy Related Activity, Business Travel, Commuting, Waste, Upstream Transportation and Distribution, Downstream Transportation and Distribution)
Total Emissions 728

Note 1 - There are 15 categories of Scope 3 emissions defined by the Greenhouse gas (GHG) Protocol.

Note 2 – This Carbon reduction plan has been developed within the scope of PPN 06/21.  ‘Building net zero into NHS procurement – the Supplier Roadmap’ which indicates Suppliers will be required to publicly report targets, emissions and publish a carbon reduction plan for global emissions aligned to the NHS net zero target for direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by April 2023 and both their direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1,2 and 3) by April 2027.

Reporting Year: 2021

Current emissions footprint:
Emissions Total (tCO2e)
Scope 1 55
Scope 2 29
Scope 3 (split by the 5 subcategories of Scope 3 emissions and detail each source – see Notes 1 and 2 on the previous page) 392
Total Emissions 476

Completed carbon reduction initiatives:

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2019 baseline. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes equate to 252 tCO2e, 41% reduction against the 2019 baseline and the measures will be in effect when performing the contract.

We are energy efficiency by implementing energy-saving measures, upgrading equipment, and optimising processes to reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions, recent programmes include changing to LED lighting and utilising energy efficient heating systems.

We promote the use of low-emission vehicles, electrify the fleet where feasible, and improve maintenance practices to minimise fuel consumption and emissions.

Emissions reduction targets & planning:

We are in negotiations of acquiring a new premises and are currently in contact with a company to aid us with our next declaration of tCo2e emissions as specified. We aim to have this published within the next six months.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to under 350 tCO2e by 2028 (the end of the Contract Term including extension options). This is a reduction of 30.5085%

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets & planning. Further information can be accessed in our latest Environmental Policy:

Scope 1

We promote the use of low-emission vehicles, electrify the fleet where feasible, and improve maintenance practices to minimise fuel consumption and emissions.

We encourage our transportation partners to use more fuel-efficient vehicles and utilising bulk deliveries where possible. This also forms part of our sub-contractor selection.

We explore alternatives to packaging or IT technologies, where possible, and invest in cleaner and more efficient packing methods, we also work with suppliers to encourage emission reductions throughout the supply chain, promote sustainable practices, and seek suppliers with lower carbon footprints.

We are energy efficiency by implementing energy-saving measures, upgrading equipment, and optimising processes to reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions, recent programmes include changing to motion-sensitive LED lighting and utilising energy efficient heating systems.

Scope 2

PHP are looking at investing into Solar panels for our warehouse to generate renewable energy on-site reducing the amount of energy purchased. Furthermore, PHP will use energy suppliers with renewable energy certificates and Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) to ensure energy supplied is from renewable sources.

Scope 3

We encourage our transportation partners to use more fuel-efficient vehicles and utilising bulk deliveries where possible. This also forms part of our sub-contractor selection.

We implement waste reduction, recycling, and composting programs to minimise waste generation and associated emissions. Consider partnerships with waste management companies that prioritise environmentally friendly practices.

Our Emissions Reduction Targets and Planning includes a carbon emissions reduction trajectory proposal that sets out the plan to achieve net zero by 2045. An illustration is shown below:
